Happy Days Newsletter
Issue no: 20 Spring 2006

It's great to see that the days are getting longer and the green shoots are arriving. To quote the poet Blake -'the sun does shine and make happy the skies, the merry bells ring to welcome the Spring.' The sense of renewal that Springtime brings gives us the energy and enthusiasm to get up and get busy with our plans. Oh yes,' say the Mum's, time to do all that decorating we've been putting off 'till the weather get's better, 'Oh no. say the Dads,' time to watch the World Cup' The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the grass is growing - and the lawnmower is broke! ' Ah yes, its spring again!

OUR NEW ADDITION

Happy Jays has had a new addition to the family in January when we bought Carlinghow Hall nursery in Batley. The fourth member is older than the rest of us put together, having been a nursery for nearly 40 years. When Tony went to the Bank to sort out our paying facilities, the Manager said, I know Carlinghow Hall, my son used to go there - he's 28 now and married! 'Why did we buy it? Well, the words of one of our parents sums it up perfectly, ' The staff go out of their way to be friendly, personable and helpful, it is a truly wonderful environment for pre-school children to develop social skills and confidence.'
We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

In the newsrecently...

The long - term boyfriend of childrens' favourite doll Barbie has undergone make-over. Ken (in case you didn't know his name) has now been made to look more macho with ripped jeans, motorcycle jacket and untidy hair.

A new survey shows children have £28 billion of electronic equipment in their bedrooms. Seven out of ten have their own TV and more than hal have a DVD player.

The Daily Express revealed that Victoria Beckham plans to write a children's book. She will write the story despite admitting that she never has read a book in her life. Seven early years experts wrote a letter to the Times claiming the Government's early start on literacy is not working. They said that early years educationshould be about laying the foundations for literacy, not asking children to read and write before they can talk. We all like parents to be punctual when collecting their children, but Louise Owen, pregnant wife of football star Michael Owen was banned from driving after speeding at 104mph saying she was late collecting her daughter on her first day at nursery! A likely excuse!

Songs to sing

We've had a special request to print this one again...for all

How did Noah build the Ark?
He built it with slippery bark. He built it wide, both long and tall,
With plenty of room for the large and small.
Who built the Ark, Noah, Noah,
Who built the Ark,
Brother Noah built the Ark.

Now come in the animals 2 by 2,
The hippopotamus and the kangaroo,
Now came in the animals 3 by 3,
Two big cats and a bumble bee,
Now came in the animals 4 by 4,
Two through the window and two through the door,
Now came in the animals 5 by 5,
The robin and sparrow both doing a jive,
Now came in the animals 6 by 6,
The elephants laughed at the monkeys ttricks!

AN ODE TO HAPPY JAYS

An ode to Happy Jays on starting school!
(from one of our parents)

How can I ever thank you
For all that you have done?
The lessons you have taught me,
Each day, packed with fun!
You're very special people in
every single way.
And now I have lovely manners and
mix so well in play.
I'm really going to miss you,
Each morning when I awake,
As you have prepared me
For my next big step to take.
I'll think back on you often
And at school I won't be fazed,
Because I had the best of grouding,
At my nursery, 'HappyJays.'

Love Alex Horn.

Nursery Education Gives Economic Benefits in Adulthood

A UK study by the Institute of Fiscal Studies has shown that children attending nursery were more likely to be better qualified and earn more higher salries when they reached adulthood.

In addition, at age 7 those children who attended nursery showed large improvements in maths and reading abilities. Nursery education does have long lasting benefits. Details can be found at www.ifs.org.uk

Are you saving money on your fees?
Is your emjployer wise to the benefits of childcare vouchers yet? If so, the first £50 a week in childcare costs can be free of tax and NI contributions. This would mean you only pay tax and NIC's on a lower salary - saving you around £16 a week if your tax rate is 22% and around £20 per week if you pay tax on some earnings at the higher 40%. This could pay for a summer holiday! Ask us for some information on voucher schemes - they are available to any size employer and can be started at any time.

ADVICE CORNER

A parents guide to "Healthy drinks for your children"

Young children can be very definite about the drinks they prefer, but these may not always be the best for them. Here are some tips on how parents can encourage children towards healthy choices.

Q. What are the best drinks for my child?

A. Milk and water are the best for children and safest for their teeth. Milk provides important nutrients and, like water, will not encourage a sweet tooth. Full fat cow's milk can be given from one year upwards. At two years semi-skimmed can be introduced if your child is eating well and skimmed milk can be introduced after five years.

Pure fruit juice can be given with meals as it contains vitamin C which helps with iron absorption. However, it also contains sugars so frequent consumption can damage teeth. Many children drink juice in between meals, filling them up so they do not want to eat. Juice should be diluted very well and offered just once a day with meals.

Other drinks such as squashes and juice drinks contain sugar or additives and are not recommended. Sugary drinks can lead to excess weight gain, poor appitite and reduced growth. If you give fizzy or sugary drinks very occasionally, dilute them well, give them at mealtimes and give your child a straw so that he liquid avoids contact with the front teeeth.

Q. Are 'diet' or 'no sugar added' drinks all right?

A. Carbonated soft drinks labelled as above may be acidic and may have other sweetners added - check the lables before you buy. These words indicate that sugar has been added: glucose, honey, syrup, fructose, dextrose, invert sugar, maltose and hydrolysed starch.

Q. What if my child doesn't like milk to drink?

A. Try dairy products such as yoghurt or cheese as a suitable alternative. Milk can be given in meals such as rice pudding or custard.

Q. When should we start giving a cup?

A. Cups should be introduced from six months and bottles discouraged past one year. Prolonged bottle use can lead to poor appetite and food refusal, iron deficiency and slow speech development.

Open-lidded cups are best although to start with you may wish to choose a free-flowing trainer cup.

Introduce a cup as a toy to allow your child to become familar with it and offer them a little sip from your own cup occasionally and very often they will wnat their own.

Q. My child will not sleep without a drink, what should I do?

A. Many children become accustomed to a comforting sweet bedtime drink. At first, gradually reduce the amount of drink offered and when this is finished do not give in to cries for more. Try a bedroom routine that does not involve drinking. Find other ways to comfort your child such as reading a story or having a cuddle - with all cups and bottles out of sight.
